U.S. Public Health Service: An agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that promotes the protection and advancement of physical and mental health

Utilization: The number of times a service is performed or supply is provided during a given period of time

Utilization management (UM): 1. The planned, systematic review of the patients in a healthcare facility against care criteria for admission, continued stay, and discharge 2. A collection of systems and processes to ensure that facilities and resources, both human and nonhuman, are used maximally and are consistent with patient care needs

Vocabulary: A list or collection of clinical words or phrases and their meanings; See controlled vocabulary

Vocabulary standard: A common definition for medical terms to encourage consistent descriptions of an individual’s condition in the health record

World Health Organization (WHO): The United Nations specialized agency for health, established on April 7, 1948, with the objective, as set out in its constitution, of the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible levels of health; responsible for The International Statistical Classification of Diseases & Related Health Problems (ICD-10)
