What You Need to Know about Undergraduate Financial Aid

There are a variety of methods for financing your HIM education. School tuition varies widely. Generally, a community college credit hour will be less expensive than a university credit hour, while state colleges typically have lower tuition costs than private colleges.

Don’t be put off by the total cost of attending an institution. Most students (80% - 90%) use some form of financial aid to help cover the costs of tuition, books, fees, and living expenses. Most schools also provide financial aid in the form of discounted tuition for deserving students. Aid is usually distributed based on three categories:

  • Needs based aid: awarded to a student based on financial need only
  • Merit based aid: awarded to a student who demonstrates scholastic talent
  • Athletic based aid: awarded to a student who participates as an athlete
